Engineering Insight on Q4 2024 ASME Code Updates

At CEI and Paulin Research Group, we prioritize keeping our software aligned with evolving industry standards and supporting our customers with up-to-date expertise. That’s why our representatives attend ASME code meetings each quarter to stay informed about the latest changes and updates to pressure equipment regulations.

This quarter, our representatives actively participated in several ASME code committee meetings, contributing to key discussions and gaining valuable insights. These meetings covered a range of critical topics across multiple committees:

Section IX & Section VIII Code Meetings | October 2024

During October 27-31, our representatives Tiradej Bunyarattaphuantu, PE and Santiago Laris, EIT attended:

  • Section IX Committee Meetings
    • Subgroup on Welding Qualifications
    • Subgroup on General Requirements (IX) of which Tiradej Bunyarattaphantu is a member
    • BPV Committee on Welding, Brazing, & Fusing 
  • Section VIII Committee Meetings
    • Working Group on Design by Analysis
    • Subgroup on Design
    • Subgroup on General Requirements (VIII) 
    • Subgroup on Heat Transfer Equipment of which Tiradej Bunyarattaphantu is the Secretary
    • BPV Committee on Pressure Vessels where Tiradej Bunyarattaphantu sat in for a fellow committee member

Meeting Insights

  • ASME Reshape Project Updates
    Several Mandatory Appendices, including 2, 5, 9, 13, 14, and 24, will now refer designers to Section VIII Division 2 for design rules in the upcoming 2025 code edition.
  • Scope Exemptions Removed from BPV VIII
    Certain scope exemptions have been removed, which may lead to jurisdictions requiring code stamps for equipment previously exempt from these requirements.
  • Tube-to-Tubesheet Test Updates
    A task group under Section IX is revising QW-193 requirements to improve clarity for code users.
  • Elliptical Heads and Tubesheets
    The Subgroup on Heat Transfer Equipment is creating rules for elliptical heads welded to tubesheets.
  • Part 5 Rewrite Progress
    The ASME BPV Section VIII Working Group on Design by Analysis is finalizing updates to align Part 5 with ASME FFS-1/API-579 standards.

Upcoming ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Events

  • The Q1 2025 ASME BPV and NB combined meeting will be held during the week of May 11 – 16th in Salt Lake City, UT.

Get to Know Our Code Experts

The information provided in this blog comes from our representatives at CEI and Paulin Research Group, Tiradej Bunyarattaphantu, PE and Santiago Laris, EIT.

Tiradej has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri. He has been with CEI for 10 years and has been involved in the ASME code since 2015. He currently sits on SGHTE for BPV VIII.

Santiago has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and has been a part of Paulin Research Group development and support team since 2020.
